World Blood Bikers Day

Blood Bikers – volunteers on motorcycles saving lives

Blood Bikers are a network of volunteers who transport urgent blood supplies between hospitals, laboratories, and other medical facilities using motorcycles. They deliver blood, medical samples, medicines, breast milk for premature babies, and other vital equipment essential for saving lives.

Currently, associations operate in countries such as England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Ireland, Ukraine, Hungary, Romania, Kenya, Australia, and New Zealand. They are also active on social media, where people can follow their work and activities.

If we take the United Kingdom as an example, more than 40 local groups are connected within the Nationwide Association of Blood Bikes (NABB). Together, they complete over 100,000 deliveries each year—mostly at night, on weekends, and during public holidays, when other courier services are not available. This saves the healthcare system significant amounts of both time and money.

In Slovenia, we do not yet have such an association, but it would be worth looking to the future and considering the possibility of starting such a project here as well.

A tribute to them on their day, and at the same time, an insight into the scope of this type of volunteering, which is still relatively unknown in our country.
